Jasmine Bhasin

The People’s Choice

If a Punjabi reboot of the iconic flick Jab We Met were to be made, casting Jasmine Bhasin as the protagonist Geet should be a no-brainer. She's fun, fab and unafraid to speak her mind. Read along as the beauty opens up about her craziest fan story, her dream nuptials and more in a tête-à-tête with Aza.

In many Asian cultures, the sacrosanct flower Jasmine holds symbolic associations with good luck and innocence. It’s safe to say that this metaphorical representation of our cover star’s name aligns with the dawn of her career as an actor. As she once mentioned in an interview, “It felt like the universe was holding my hands.“ Destiny guided the beauty from Kota, her hometown to Jaipur where she pursued hospitality in college, then to New Delhi for work, and eventually to the glitzy avenues of Mumbai. Bhasin’s first major project was a modelling gig for a mobile campaign which she agreed to do for some extra cash. Little did she know it was the stepping stone that would catapult her to stardom.

Having moved across multiple cities, Jasmine has weathered feelings of loneliness and the pressure of keeping all the plates spinning on her own. Despite the struggle, Mumbai holds a special place in her heart, out of all the cities she's called home.“The day I arrived in Mumbai, I just had a good feeling about the city. I knew that my future was here,“ she tells me as we wait for the elevator to arrive, ironically shortly after we've discussed the traffic. “It has given me everything that I've dreamt of and taught me the importance of hard work. Oh, and it's also where my fascination with luxury shopping began!“

There was a Nokia campaign that I did just to earn some extra money, completely unaware of the scale of the project. The huge campaign gave me a lot of visibility and I started getting offers from multiple photographers from Jaipur and Delhi.

Main Character Energy

As Jasmine, clad in athleisure – an Adidas jacket and shorts paired with Balenciaga slides, all yellow—enters the studio with her entourage, she cuts a self-assured figure, akin to the lead of a clique often seen in 2000s American teenage dramas. It’s probably this “main character energy” that led to her discovery.

“My first job was at the front desk of ITC Rajputana in Jaipur where I started getting noticed and was offered a few modeling opportunities,” she tells me while skimming through the selection of outfits placed on the rack. After cautiously placing back a sequined Anshika Tak Label lehenga (that she was in awe of) on the stand, she pulls back into the conversation elaborating on what accelerated her career in acting, “There was a Nokia campaign that I did just to earn some extra money, completely unaware of the scale of the project. The huge campaign gave me a lot of visibility and I started getting offers from multiple photographers from Jaipur and Delhi. One photographer put the images on a website, and I got casted in a South advert and then my debut film, Vaanam.“

I am somebody who can't sit in one place. I need to keep going and growing. Last year, I enrolled in a rigorous theatre workshop at Adi Shakti laboratory, which focuses on activating emotions through breathing patterns.

While it might be tempting to attribute Jasmine’s rise in the industry to a kiss of kismet, success cannot sustain without hard work. The avalanche of love she continues to receive from her followers on Instagram (a whopping 8.4 million of them), more than a decade after her debut, only serves to prove my point.

Jasmine is on the floor wearing a gorgeous blue blouse and pant set with celestial embroidery from Silky Bindra’s exclusive collection in collaboration with Aza. Before we get started, she touches up her makeup and tells me about the various programs that have held her in good stead as she continues to master her craft.“ I am somebody who can't sit in one place. I need to keep going and growing. I have been taking up a couple of acting workshops as well as self-development courses for a while now.” Jasmine returns the vanity mirror to her makeup artist, thanking him in her distinct fruity voice. As she shifts her attention back to me, she shares, “Last year, I enrolled in a rigorous theatre workshop at Adi Shakti laboratory, which focuses on activating emotions through breathing patterns. The unique technique made it a truly inspiring learning experience for me. Whenever I find the time, I’m eager to return there.”

“Please don't stop the music, I get distracted and then my mind starts spiraling,“ Jasmine tells the team candidly. Her intone reminds me of her time in the Bigg Boss house where she wore her authenticity like a badge of honour.” Being vulnerable has always been considered as a weakness because people think you can be taken advantage of. But I've always believed that staying true to your emotions is a strength, especially for an actor.“ Someone from the crew helps fit her heel into her feet as she continues, “As an artist I feel vulnerability is your biggest strength because if you feel more, you can emote better, understand your character well and portray it authentically.“

Punjabi Kudi

Our muse rose to prominence in 2020 with her stint in Bigg Boss 14 opening new avenues for her, especially in regional cinema. Her appearances in popular music videos such as Pani Di Gal, alongside Sakhiyaan-fame singer and songwriter Maninder Buttar and her Punjabi debut film Honeymoon, opposite Gippy Grewal, cemented her status as the darling of Punjab. Now, in 2024, she has two releases lined up—Carry on Jattiye and Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale di—from the biggest franchises of Pollywood. Could this be the year Jasmine Bhasin’s popularity in Punjabi entertainment rises to its climax? Definitely looks like it.

The Punjabi movie set life is like attending a big fat Indian wedding. The first two hours just go in meeting everyone and chatting with them while gorging on some yummy food.

“Please play trending Punjabi music!” Jasmine pleads, as the hair and makeup team do their final touches on her. She looks radiant in a lavender Aariyana Couture mermaid skirt set with an ethereal net drape attached to the bustier. “Preferably Jasmine Sandlas songs,” she continues. It’s apparent that Jasmine’s affinity towards all things Punjabi transcends her professional life. “You know, the Punjabi movie set life is like attending a big fat Indian wedding. The first two hours just go in meeting everyone and chatting with them while gorging on some yummy food. Even if you’ve eaten breakfast and come, you must have another breakfast on set with everybody.” That's not to say that she's not ready to make her entry in Bollywood: “I believe your 'first’ anything has to be very special and stays with you forever, so I'm just waiting for the right script to make my debut in Hindi films.“ Guess we'll have to wait and hopefully watch soon.

How Deep is your Love?

Imagine this, you've just returned home from work and find a ton of gifts lying around for you. Clueless, you ask your help who left these pleasant surprises. Flattery turns to fear quickly when you learn it was someone who posed as your cousin and spent the day at your home, waiting for you to arrive before giving up and finally leaving in the evening. This is a story of love. Crazy, passionate, fan love for Jasmine Bhasin.

“She even ate lunch and played with my pets before leaving the house. It was so crazy because I didn't even meet her!“ Jasmine exclaims while unpacking her takeaway consisting of a gluten-free grilled chicken bowl. “I need to eat very healthy food now,“ says her post-travel guilt.

It's not something I've thought about a lot, but I think I would love a beach or an island wedding.

Talking about travel—a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon Jasmine's Instagram profile, and my eyes were immediately drawn to one of her pinned posts. Set against a backdrop of lush greenery and an azure water body, she exuded a free-spirited vibe in her gorgeous boho look. Being a water baby suits her. It's no wonder that she even imagines a balmy beach-side wedding for herself. As she walks out of the changing room, decked in a dreamy Nitika Gujral ivory blouse and skirt set paired with heels of punishing height and a diaphanous veil cascading behind her, we get a glimpse of Jasmine as a bride. But what's her vision for her dream wedding?

“It's not something I've thought about a lot, but I think I would love a beach or an island wedding. I'd like to wear easy-breezy, flowy outfits in pastel colors for most events, if not all.“

I get an itch to know more about Jasmine's wedding plans; resisting the temptation, I instead ask her about her closest industry relationships. “Honestly, I'm not very sociable and have always kept myself busy with work. However, I did make strong friendships during my time in Khatron Ke Khiladi - Harsh, Bharti, Puneet, Nidhi and Aly are my forever people.“ I may not have been able to unsheathe more details about her dream wedding, but I do now know who's for sure making it to the guest list.

As we wrap up the shoot, Jasmine capers around the studio, personally bidding goodbye to the team, refilling the room with energy after a long shoot day. It's unsurprising that she's everyone’s favourite - the people’s choice.
